About Shravanabelagola Temple

Shravanabelagola is a historic Jain pilgrimage town located between Bengaluru and Mangaluru. The name means “White Pond of the Monk” (Belagola = white pond). The town is centered around two rocky hills:

Vindhyagiri Hill – Houses the iconic Gommateshwara Statue

Chandragiri Hill – Contains ancient Jain temples (basadis) and inscriptions

The Gommateshwara statue, built in 981 AD by the Ganga dynasty minister Chavundaraya, is one of the tallest free-standing monolithic statues in the world. It represents Lord Bahubali, symbolizing renunciation, peace, and spiritual victory.

The town has over 800 inscriptions dating back centuries, making it highly significant for historians and archaeologists.

The grand Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony attracts lakhs of devotees. During this event, the statue is bathed with milk, saffron, turmeric, sandalwood, and precious offerings.
