Historical PlaceQutub Minar, also spelled Qutb or Qutab Minar, is one of India’s most historic monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in 1199 AD under Qutb-ud-din Aibak, the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, and was continued mainly by Iltutmish, with later contributions by Firoz Shah Tughlaq. The structure tapers from a diameter of about 14.3 m at the base to 2.7 m at the top, with five distinct storeys marked by projecting balconies. Its red sandstone and marble surfaces are decorated with intricate carvings and inscriptions.
Although the Qutub Minar’s interior is closed to public access for safety reasons since a tragic accident in 1981, the surrounding complex remains open and widely visited.
The monument is not only an architectural marvel but also an important cultural and historical landmark representing early Indo-Islamic architecture in India.
