About Lonar Lake

Lonar Lake is located on the Deccan Plateau and is the only known meteorite impact crater formed in basalt rock on Earth. The lake has a diameter of about 1.8 km and is surrounded by steep crater walls.

The water of Lonar Lake is saline and alkaline, supporting unique microorganisms that are rarely found elsewhere. Due to these properties, the lake has been studied by NASA, ISRO, and international scientists for astrobiology and planetary research.

Around the lake are several ancient temples dating back to the 6th–12th century, including Daitya Sudan Temple, Gomukh Temple, and Kamalja Devi Temple, reflecting the region’s historical and religious significance.

Occasionally, the lake changes color (pinkish or greenish) due to algal blooms, which attracts global attention.
